About Kate Denton

Kate Denton`s strongest interest is in taking the classical traditions and reinterpreting the form, and so creating images that go beyond mere representation and bring into the sculpture a sense of other qualities such as power, movement or humour, using different materials to achieve this personal interpretation. To achieve this she often sculpts using plaster or very liquid clay mixed with straw. These techniques were used by Dame Elizabeth Fink and many other sculptors during this century

Artist Statement of Kate Denton

Kate Denton`s Personal Statement:
I have been a full time sculptor for over 30 years and a member of the
Royal Society of British Sculptors since 1993. I spent my formative years
in Sheffield and Jersey, before going to Goldsmiths College to study Fine
Art. At Goldsmiths College I trained under Sir Ivor Robert Jones
studying classical modelling with much emphasis on anatomy and
To this day I continue to produce classical figurative portraits modelled to
resemble the subject while also capturing the character and inner qualities
of the subject.
However, my strongest interest is in taking the classical traditions and
reinterpreting the form, and so creating images that go beyond mere
representation and bring into the sculpture a sense of other qualities such
as power, movement or humour, using different materials to achieve this
personal interpretation. To achieve this I often sculpt using plaster or very
liquid clay mixed with straw. The use of these techniques was used by
Dame Elizabeth Frink and many other sculptors during this century

Reviews of work by Kate Denton

"When Denton`s creatures are caught in the middle of movement... the illusion is as perfect as in stop-motion photography. Better, indeed, since it exists in three dimensions rather than two. But when they are at rest the effect is even more dynamic, because the muscles are tense, the whole body poised for action."
John Russell Taylor; Art Critic of The Daily Telegraph

"I saw the pieces as they were being unpacked... and I came away breathless at the sheer vitality in her work, which brings to mind Rodin and Epstein."
Gordon Young; Art Critic of The Jersey Evening Post

"The sculpture is a magnificent, striking figure and I have received lots of letters, phone calls and e-mails saying what a moving and impressive occasion it was"
Graham Stuart, Secretary to the West Malling Airfield Memorial Group

"Simply awesome and totally unreviewable"
Michael Coulson; Art Critic of the Johannesburg Financial Mail

"It is not hard to understand modern art. If it hangs on a wall it's a painting, and if you can walk around it it's a sculpture."
Tom Stoppard
